Alan Wong Secures Strong Lead in San Francisco’s District 4 Race

Alan Wong, the incumbent District 4 supervisor in San Francisco’s Sunset neighborhood, has achieved a significant lead in the recent election, securing 72.3% of the vote against his closest rival, Natalie Gee, who garnered 27.7%. Wong’s victory is seen as a testament to his pragmatic approach and dedication to listening to the concerns of Sunset residents.

Wong’s Campaign Strategy

Wong’s campaign focused on direct engagement with the community, as he knocked on doors throughout the Sunset district. He emphasized a practical approach over ideological grandstanding, which appeared to resonate with voters. Wong’s connection with Mayor Daniel Lurie, who actively supported him, likely bolstered his campaign.

Despite his victory, Wong’s position is not entirely secure. This election was to fill the remainder of former supervisor Joel Engardio’s term, who was recalled. Wong will face another election in November for a full four-year term, where Gee is expected to challenge him again.

Financial Backing and Political Dynamics

The District 4 race saw significant financial involvement, with over $2.6 million spent, much of it from political action committees (PACs). Wong benefitted from $1.6 million in PAC spending, including contributions from SF Believes, a PAC supported by Mayor Lurie’s wealthy allies. Gee, who positioned herself as the pro-labor candidate, raised $402,000 in direct donations and focused on making the Sunset affordable for working families.

Other candidates in the race included Albert Chow, Jeremy Greco, and David Lee. Chow, known for his advocacy to reopen the Great Highway to car traffic, had a notable presence, initially surpassing Gee in the first round of voting before ranked-choice eliminations.

The upcoming November election will be crucial for Wong as he seeks to solidify his leadership in District 4. The race will likely continue to draw attention and resources from various political factions within San Francisco.
