Tropical Storm Jangmi Disrupts Japan, Affecting Power and Transport

Tropical Storm Jangmi swept across Japan on Wednesday, bringing with it fierce winds and heavy rain that have disrupted daily life across the country. The storm’s center was located off the main island of Honshu, moving northeast towards the Tokyo region. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported maximum sustained winds of up to 82 feet per second, warning of potential life-threatening disasters along the Pacific coast.

Impact on Power and Transportation

As of the latest reports, nearly 60,000 households have lost power due to the storm, according to government spokesperson Minoru Kihara. In a press briefing, Kihara urged residents to take early action to protect their lives if they sense any danger. Evacuation advisories have been issued to hundreds of thousands of residents across eight prefectures in southwestern, central, and eastern Japan.

The storm has also caused significant disruptions in transportation. Airlines such as Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways canceled nearly 900 international and domestic flights on Wednesday morning. Bullet train services in Kyushu and parts of western Japan experienced delays, while some rail services in the Tokyo area were suspended, with more disruptions expected throughout the day.

Business Closures

In anticipation of the severe weather, major companies have taken precautionary measures. Toyota Motor announced the suspension of operations at 13 domestic plants on Wednesday morning. Similarly, Suzuki Motor halted work at all five of its plants in Shizuoka Prefecture, located west of Tokyo, during the morning hours.

The storm’s impact on Japan highlights the importance of preparedness and the need for communities to remain vigilant during extreme weather events. As the storm continues its path, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure public safety and minimize disruptions.
