A new poll released by the University of Texas/Texas Politics Project shows Democrats holding slim leads in several statewide contests as Texas heads toward the November 3 election. The survey, conducted between Sept. 25 and Oct. 5, places state Rep. James Talarico ahead of Attorney General Ken Paxton in the U.S. Senate race, 50% to 47%.
Governor’s race remains tight
In the governor’s race, incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott trails Democrat Gino Hinojosa 49% to 48%. Abbott leads among male voters, rural residents and those in the suburbs, while Hinojosa is favored by women, Latino voters and those living in urban areas.
Other statewide contests
The poll also shows Democrats leading in the lieutenant governor, attorney general and railroad commissioner races. Republican Don Huffines holds a one‑point advantage in the state comptroller’s race.
Voter priorities
When asked about the issues most important to them, 21% of respondents said the cost of living tops the list, followed by the state of the economy at 15%. Those concerns were cited by 38% of Republican voters and 33% of Democratic voters.
Early voting in Texas begins on Monday, Oct. 19, with Election Day scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3.
