Vachel Lindsay’s Springfield Still Echoes at the Hoogland

Pull up around 7:45 on a Friday night in July — still light enough to see the families spreading blankets on car hoods, the kids already antsy, the smell of popcorn drifting from the concession stand before you’ve even found a spot. The Route 66 Twin Drive-In on Peoria Road has been part of Springfield summers since 1995, and on a warm night it feels like a small, stubborn miracle that it’s still here.

The lot holds around 400 cars across two screens. Screen one usually gets the bigger release; screen two tends toward family fare or the second-run pick. You tune your car radio to the posted AM frequency and the sound comes through clean enough — bring a portable radio if your battery’s unreliable, or if you want to sit outside on a lawn chair, which plenty of people do. The lot isn’t manicured or glamorous. It’s asphalt and grass and a gravel entrance road. That’s kind of the point.

What you’re actually paying for is the double feature. One admission — typically around $10 for adults, $5 for kids, and under-five free — covers both films on whichever screen you park at. You don’t need to plan around show times the way you would at a multiplex. You show up, you settle in, and eventually the sky goes dark enough for the first movie to start. The second begins maybe 90 minutes later. If you leave after the first, no one stops you, but most people stay.

The concession stand is worth the trip on its own. The nachos are the gas-station variety, which is exactly right. The hot dogs are better than they have any business being. There’s a real cheeseburger if you want it, and the frozen lemonade is the thing to get on a hot night. Prices are honest — you’re not paying downtown restaurant rates for a box of candy.

Go with someone who’s up for a little chaos. The lot fills fast on summer weekends, and you’ll want to arrive 30 to 45 minutes before sundown to stake out a decent spot with a clear sightline. If you’re coming from downtown, it’s a straight shot north on Peoria Road — maybe ten minutes. The drive-in sits on the western edge of the old Route 66 corridor through town, and on the way out you’ll pass the kind of Springfield that doesn’t make the tourism brochures: storage units, tire shops, a couple of taverns. It’s a fine drive.

The crowd skews local and multigenerational. You’ll park next to a couple in their sixties who’ve been coming since the place opened, and next to them a family with a toddler in pajamas who won’t make it to intermission. There’s something about a drive-in that lowers everyone’s guard — you’re in your own space and in a shared space at the same time, which is a rarer combination than it sounds.

The season runs roughly April through September, sometimes into October if the weather cooperates. Check their Facebook page for the current schedule before you go; they update it weekly and it’s the most reliable source. Cash is accepted at the gate; so are cards. Get there early, bring a jacket even in July, and let the second feature run long past when you thought you’d be home.
