Oklahoma Legalizes Bottle Rockets with New Fireworks Law

Governor Kevin Stitt has signed Senate Bill 1948, known as the Rocket’s Red Glare Act, which legalizes the sale and use of bottle rockets in Oklahoma. This marks the return of these fireworks to the state’s night skies after a long-standing ban due to fire hazard concerns.

Impact on Local Businesses

The new legislation is expected to boost local businesses, as fireworks stands and warehouses prepare for increased sales. Jennifer Coley, manager of Rudy’s Fireworks in Edmond, expressed optimism about the potential revenue increase, noting that neighboring states have long allowed bottle rockets. “That’s going to bring a lot more tax dollars back into the state of Oklahoma. I think it was a really good decision,” Coley said.

With the new law, fireworks can now be sold year-round. Tammy Crawford, office manager of Fireworks Warehouse, highlighted the benefits for smaller businesses in the Oklahoma City metro area, stating that the year-round sales license will now be available to everyone.

Considerations and Safety Measures

Despite the potential for increased sales, some businesses, like Rudy’s Fireworks, are cautious about the demand for year-round sales. They primarily sell during major holidays such as the Fourth of July, Diwali, and New Year’s.

Residents are advised to check local regulations before using fireworks, as cities can still impose bans during fire danger conditions, even on private property. The state Fire Marshal’s Office encourages attending licensed shows and emphasizes safety during celebrations.
