Great Scot Closures in Findlay and North Baltimore Concern Local Community

The impending closure of Great Scot grocery stores in Findlay and North Baltimore has left many residents concerned about their future grocery shopping options. The stores, which have been community staples for years, are set to close at the start of July. The North Baltimore and Findlay West Main Cross Street locations will close on July 1, while the Findlay Broad Avenue location will close on July 8.

Community Impact

Longtime customers like Steve Roethlisberger, who has shopped at the Findlay location for 30 years, express disbelief and concern over the closures. Roethlisberger notes that while the store may not compete with larger chains like Walmart in terms of business, it holds a significant place in the community’s daily life.

Becky Freeman, another local resident, highlights the accessibility challenges posed by the closures. As someone who is partially blind, Freeman finds it difficult to navigate the traffic to reach larger stores, emphasizing the loss of a conveniently located grocery store.

Nonprofit Concerns

The closures also pose a significant challenge for local nonprofits such as the Christian Clearing House, which has partnered with Great Scot for 30 years to provide food assistance. Director Tammy Stahl explains that the timing is particularly challenging, as the demand for food assistance increases during the summer months when children are out of school.

Stahl is concerned about transitioning the program to other grocery chains like Walmart or Kroger, as gift card solutions could lead to donor funds being used for non-food items. The nonprofit is exploring alternatives to ensure that the food needs of Hancock County residents are met.

SpartanNash, the owner of Great Scot, has not provided a reason for the closures but expressed gratitude to their customers and employees.
