Dinner at Parasson’s

The parking lot on Ghent Road was half-full on a Wednesday evening, which around here is usually a good sign. I’d driven past Aladdin’s Eatery dozens of times without stopping — it sits in a low-slung strip along the Fairlawn-Bath corridor, nothing about the exterior demanding your attention. But a friend who grew up in Cuyahoga Falls had been telling me for years to just go, and eventually I did.

Aladdin’s is a small regional chain, born in Cleveland in the 1990s and built on Lebanese-American cooking. The Akron location has been quietly drawing regulars for well over a decade, and once you eat there you understand why the same faces keep coming back. The food is consistent, the portions are honest, and the prices are still reasonable enough that you don’t feel like you’re budgeting around a night out.

We started with the hummus — classic, smooth, finished with a swirl of olive oil and a shake of paprika — and a plate of fried cauliflower that came out golden and lightly spiced, nothing heavy about it. Both disappeared fast. The pita bread arrives warm, and it’s the right vehicle for everything on the table.

I ordered the chicken shawarma wrap, which comes tightly rolled with garlic sauce, tomato, and pickles. It’s the kind of thing you eat in about four bites before you realize you should have slowed down. My companion went with the lentil soup and a tabbouleh salad, and both were genuinely good — the tabbouleh bright with parsley and lemon, not the dry, grain-heavy versions you sometimes get. The lentil soup was earthy and filling without being thick or starchy.

If you want to make a full meal of it, the combination plates are worth considering. You can build around falafel, kafta, or grilled chicken, and the rice pilaf that comes alongside is better than it has any obligation to be. The fattoush salad — crisp romaine, radish, cucumber, toasted pita chips, sumac — is something I’d order as a main on a lighter night.

The room itself is casual and clean, with low lighting and a quiet enough atmosphere that you can actually have a conversation. It draws a mixed crowd: families, students from the University of Akron, couples, solo diners working through a laptop meal. Nobody’s in a hurry, and the staff doesn’t rush you either.

Prices are mid-range without being precious about it. Most entrees run $12–$17, and you can eat very well for under $20 a person if you’re not ordering drinks. They do have beer and wine if you want it.

What I keep coming back to is how straightforward the whole experience is. No performance, no trend-chasing, no long explanation on the menu about sourcing. It’s just well-prepared food from a cuisine that Akron doesn’t have represented as well as it should. If you want a vegetarian meal, this is one of the better options in the city — the menu is built around produce and legumes in a way that doesn’t feel like an afterthought.

Go on a weeknight if you can. It’s quieter, the service is attentive, and you won’t feel crowded. Bring someone who’s skeptical about this kind of food and let the garlic sauce do the talking.
