Upcoming deadlines for voter registration and mail‑in ballot requests in Washington, Fayette and Greene counties

With the Nov. 3 mid‑term election less than a week away, voters in Washington, Fayette and Greene counties must act quickly to register or update their voter information. The deadline to register or make any changes is Monday, and Oct. 27 is the last day to request a mail‑in ballot.

Mail‑in ballot requests to date

Washington County has processed 16,671 mail‑in ballot requests since the office began mailing ballots on Oct. 2. Of those, 11,001 requests came from Democrats, 4,233 from Republicans and 1,437 from independent or non‑affiliated voters.

Fayette County reported 7,758 ballots sent out as of Thursday afternoon. The breakdown includes 5,439 Democratic requests, 1,895 Republican requests and 424 from independent or non‑affiliated voters.

Greene County’s election board logged 1,935 requests, with 1,310 from Democrats, 536 from Republicans and 89 from independent or non‑affiliated voters.

Election directors urge early action

Washington County Elections Director Melanie Ostrander warned, “I wouldn’t wait until the 27th to apply. If you know you want a mail‑in, I would apply soon to ensure you have your ballot and return it timely for the election.” She added that the office will begin offering “counter voting” today, allowing voters to obtain a ballot, complete it on site and return it immediately.

Ostrander also noted that the current volume of mail‑in requests is lower than she anticipated for a hotly contested mid‑term cycle. “I anticipated a higher volume as far as inquiries and ballot requests than what we’re seeing,” she said. “So hopefully people are planning to vote in person.”

Fayette County Elections Director MaryBeth Kuznik echoed the call for prompt action. “We urge people to get it done as soon as possible,” she said. “They should do it right away. Now is the time.” Kuznik confirmed that Fayette County will also provide “counter voting” through Oct. 27.

How to request and return a ballot

Voters can register or request a mail‑in ballot online at vote.pa.gov or visit their local elections office before the deadlines. All mail‑in ballots must be returned to the voter’s county elections office no later than 8 p.m. on Nov. 3.

Why early participation matters

Early registration and ballot requests help ensure that every eligible voter can cast a vote without last‑minute hurdles. By taking advantage of “counter voting,” residents can receive, complete and submit their ballots in a single visit, reducing the risk of missed deadlines.

Election officials across the three counties stress that timely action not only safeguards individual voting rights but also strengthens the community’s collective voice in the upcoming mid‑term elections.
