Newark Mayor Criticizes State Police Tactics at Delaney Hall Protest

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka has voiced concerns over the tactics employed by the New Jersey State Police at Delaney Hall, following an order by Governor Mikie Sherrill. The governor had directed the police to manage the situation outside the detention center after protesters, advocating for illegal immigrants detained there, defied orders to move to a designated ‘First Amendment zone.’

Concerns Over Police Tactics

Mayor Baraka, while acknowledging the governor’s authority to act, criticized the methods used by the state police. He described the agency as ‘a sword,’ suggesting that their involvement often leads to conflict. Baraka emphasized the need for local authorities, including Newark’s public safety director and health department, to be involved in decision-making processes to ensure community safety and appropriate responses.

The protests at Delaney Hall were sparked by allegations from detainees of physical and psychological mistreatment, including inadequate medical care and food. These claims have intensified scrutiny on the facility, operated by GEO Group under a national contract with ICE.

Legal Actions and Facility Concerns

Baraka highlighted ongoing litigation against GEO Group, citing their failure to comply with local code ordinances, which he believes pose significant health and safety risks. Newark Business Administrator Eric Pennington has sought access to Delaney Hall to verify the conditions inside. The city plans to expand its lawsuit if access is denied, potentially involving the state health department to ensure detainee safety.

In response to these allegations, a DHS spokesperson stated that detainees receive adequate provisions, including meals evaluated by certified dietitians, and have access to communication with family and legal representatives.
