Trump and Paxton Demand Proof of Life as Democrat Senate Candidate James Talarico Remains Out of Texas

State Rep. James Talarico (D‑District 50), the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate, has not appeared in person at a Texas campaign event since September 26. The Texas Republican Party’s top officials have taken the silence seriously. At a rally in San Antonio on October 7, Attorney General Ken Paxton asked the crowd, “Where is James Talarico?” and later posted on X that his campaign’s simple request is “proof of life.” President Donald Trump echoed the demand on Truth Social, labeling the candidate “MISSING IN ACTION!” and calling for a debate between the two Senate hopefuls.

Timeline of the candidate’s absence

According to NBC News, Talarico’s last public, in‑person Texas campaign stop was a fundraiser on September 26. Sources differ on his subsequent New York fundraising dates: NBC News cites a private event on September 29, while Texas Scorecard published an invitation for September 28 and later described the fundraising swing as continuing on September 29.

On September 30, Talarico was scheduled to attend the United States Hispanic Business Council forum in Edinburg in person. He instead joined by video, explaining that an urgent‑care clinic in Dallas had diagnosed him with the flu. Campaign spokesman JT Ennis said the candidate “looks forward to being back out this weekend after recovering from the flu.” No fixed return date has been set.

Republican calls for accountability

Paxton raised the issue again at the October 8 rally, leading the crowd in a chant of “Where is James Talarico?” He later posted on X, repeating his request for proof of life, a phrase also used by his spokeswoman Madison Cercy in comments to NBC News.

President Trump’s Truth Social post added national pressure, urging the two Senate nominees to debate. While no debate has been scheduled, the Trump administration’s involvement underscores the importance of transparent campaigning in the final weeks before Texas early voting begins on October 19.

Unverified rumors and the campaign’s response

On October 9, commentator Spencer Pratt claimed on X that unnamed sources said Talarico was in a mental‑health facility. Pratt offered no documentation or named source. Blaze Media host Sara Gonzales also said she had “unverified information” about the candidate’s whereabouts but provided no evidence. The Dallas Express found no public record or campaign statement confirming a facility stay, and the campaign continues to attribute the absence to the flu.

These unsubstantiated claims have generated online chatter, but the factual record remains limited to the candidate’s own statements and the timeline of public events.

Broader campaign context

Talarico’s campaign has faced additional scrutiny over his use of Christian language. A June article noted that his longtime Austin congregation, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, listed Planned Parenthood Greater Texas among organizations it supported through its benevolence budget. Talarico describes himself as a “Presbyterian seminarian” and has placed his faith near the center of his Senate bid.

Social media activist Hasan Piker, a left‑leaning streamer, urged Talarico’s supporters to keep pressure on the candidate if he wins, but his remarks do not relate to the current health issue.

Upcoming events

CNN and Jubilee Media have scheduled a live town hall with Talarico in Fort Worth on October 14 at 7 p.m. Central, with Attorney General Paxton also invited. Texas early voting runs from October 19 through October 30, and Election Day is November 3.

As the campaign enters its final stretch, President Trump and Attorney General Paxton’s calls for transparency reflect a commitment to ensuring that Texas voters receive clear, factual information about the candidates seeking their support.
