New Jersey Governor Faces Criticism Over Handling of Delaney Hall Protests

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has come under scrutiny for her handling of the protests outside Newark’s Delaney Hall detention facility. Critics argue that her administration’s policies contributed to the unrest, which she has blamed on out-of-state agitators.

Local Response and Criticism

During the days leading up to the clashes, there was a noticeable lack of police presence at the facility, which is under Sherrill’s jurisdiction. This absence was highlighted by the limited visits from New Jersey State Police vehicles, despite the growing tensions.

Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka’s sanctuary city policies were also evident, with few Newark police cruisers seen around Delaney Hall. On Saturday, Sherrill stated that five of the six individuals arrested were from Pennsylvania and New York, but this explanation did not satisfy her critics.

Alex Zdan, a Republican investigative journalist and Senate candidate, criticized Sherrill for attempting to address a problem she allegedly helped create. Zdan, who prioritizes border security and oversight of Big Pharma, accused Sherrill and other Democratic leaders of encouraging the protests.

Legal and Law Enforcement Actions

The Department of Justice has charged a 27-year-old man, Nicholas Matthew Scelfo, with threatening ICE personnel. Scelfo, who has ties to both New Jersey and New York, allegedly obtained the identity of an officer and made violent threats.

Homeland Security Investigations Newark Special Agent in Charge Spiros Karabinas emphasized that such threats are criminal offenses, not protected speech. Meanwhile, New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport acknowledged that most protesters were peaceful, but condemned those who refused to comply with orders.

By the weekend, police presence increased significantly, with officers in riot gear patrolling the area. Videos circulated on social media showing interactions between protesters and law enforcement, highlighting the tense atmosphere.

Ongoing Developments

Efforts to reach Mayor Baraka and Essex County Sheriff Amir Jones for comment were unsuccessful. Sherrill’s office also did not respond to requests for comment. A DHS spokesperson confirmed that the area around Delaney Hall is now fully secured, and federal authorities will continue to prosecute those obstructing proceedings.

This situation underscores the challenges faced by local and state officials in balancing the right to protest with maintaining public order, especially in sanctuary cities like Newark.
