The Man Behind Walls That Remember at Grayson Stadium

Grayson Stadium has been sitting at the edge of Daffin Park since 1926, and there is nothing quite like it in Georgia.

I first went because a friend dragged me to a Savannah Bananas game three summers ago. I went reluctantly — I am not much of a baseball person — and I have been back more times than I can count. Part of that is the Bananas themselves, their trick plays and choreographed nonsense and general refusal to take themselves seriously. But part of it is the stadium. The moment I settled into one of those old wooden grandstand seats and looked out at the grass under the lights, I understood why people who grew up here get a little misty talking about the place.

The man who helped me understand it better was Gerald, a groundskeeper who has worked at Daffin Park for going on nineteen years. I ran into him before gates opened one evening, and he walked me around the perimeter without anyone asking him to. He pointed out the WPA-era brickwork along the exterior, the way the original architects oriented the diamond so the afternoon sun wouldn’t blind hitters. He mentioned that Babe Ruth played here once, and Ty Cobb, and that Jackie Robinson suited up at Grayson in 1953 before he retired. Gerald said it matter-of-factly, the way you would if you worked next to a piece of history every day and had made peace with how extraordinary ordinary things can be.

The stadium holds around 4,000 people. On Bananas game nights, it sells out — often months in advance — so if that is why you are going, plan accordingly. Tickets for Bananas shows run around $25 per person and include all food and drinks inside the park. That alone is worth noting: you pay once and you eat hot dogs and popcorn and drink beer without watching your wallet all night. For a Savannah summer evening, that is a genuinely good deal.

But Grayson hosts other things too. The Coastal Plain League has had teams here. SCAD has used it for events. And sometimes it is just open, part of Daffin Park, sitting there with its brick and its old bones in the Midtown neighborhood along Victory Drive. If you walk past in the daylight when nothing is scheduled, the gates to the exterior concourse are usually unlocked and you can walk right up to the fence and look in. I have done this more than once, usually early on a weekend morning when the park is quiet and the grass is still wet. It costs nothing. It is one of the more peaceful things you can do in this city.

Gerald told me he has seen people come from across the country just to stand in the outfield and take pictures. He seemed genuinely pleased by that, not in a promotional way, but the way someone is pleased when they realize other people love the same thing they do. He swept up some dirt with a push broom while he said it, and then he went back to work.

Savannah has grander things to offer tourists and plenty of prettier settings than a baseball stadium beside a public park. Grayson is neither grand nor pretty in the conventional sense. What it is, is old and real, and those two qualities are harder to find than people think.
