Peoria City Council to Decide on Vistancia Cell Tower Proposal

The Peoria City Council is set to make a crucial decision regarding a proposed 70-foot cell tower in the Vistancia community, a project that has sparked significant debate among local residents. Verizon has proposed building the wireless communications facility at the Foothills Center, citing the need to improve unreliable cell service in the area.

Community Concerns

Residents near the proposed site have expressed concerns that the tower could negatively impact their views, decrease property values, and pose potential safety risks. During a hearing on May 7, one resident highlighted the impact on local real estate, stating, “Homes near towers can lose approximately 8 percent of their value.” Another resident emphasized the aesthetic disruption, noting, “We have million-dollar homes, and now I’m going to be looking at a 70-foot tower out my back window.”

Support for Improved Service

On the other hand, supporters of the tower argue that the benefits of reliable cellular service outweigh these concerns. They point out that poor service can lead to safety issues, especially during emergencies. “There’s a lot of people who are desperate and have actually listed the number of 911 calls that were dropped,” a resident supporting the proposal mentioned.

Planning and Zoning Commission’s Decision

The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission previously denied the application on May 7, siding with opponents of the tower. Commissioner Tony Feiter remarked, “These homeowners bought homes with view fencing next to a premier community amenity, I just don’t see this as an appropriate land use at that location.”

Upcoming Council Meeting

The Peoria City Council will consider Verizon’s appeal on Tuesday, with the authority to approve, deny, or modify the proposal. City officials are encouraging residents to attend the meeting and provide public comment. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Peoria City Hall.
