Waukee Coffee Chain Raises $20,000 for Mental Health Initiatives

Hyper Energy Bar, a coffee and energy drink company based in Waukee, Iowa, has successfully raised over $20,000 to support mental health programs. This initiative was part of a special drink campaign in collaboration with NAMI Iowa during Mental Health Awareness Month in May.

Local Business Takes Initiative

The campaign was spearheaded by Chris Whaylen, the founder and owner of Hyper Energy Bar. Whaylen, who has personally faced mental health challenges, shared his story publicly to raise awareness and support for mental health initiatives. He emphasized that mental health issues can affect anyone, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status.

Whaylen’s efforts were supported by a public testimony on social media, created in collaboration with NAMI Iowa. The campaign led to the creation of a seasonal drink named “Better Days,” with all proceeds from its sales being donated to NAMI Iowa. This effort resulted in over $20,000 being raised for mental health programs.

Impact on the Community

Ryan Crane, the executive director of NAMI Iowa, noted that the partnership with Hyper Energy Bar has helped the organization connect with younger audiences, who are generally more open to discussing mental health issues. Crane also expressed hope that this campaign might inspire other nonprofits to form similar partnerships to address mental health stigma.

Whaylen highlighted the importance of addressing mental health stigma, encouraging people to be open about their struggles and seek help. He believes that embracing these conversations can help individuals find the resources and support they need, rather than keeping their challenges hidden.
