Congressional Candidate Faces Scrutiny Over Deleted Radical Posts

Darializa Avila Chevalier, a democratic socialist congressional candidate from New York, has come under scrutiny for deleting a Twitter account that contained numerous controversial posts. These posts, spanning from 2018 to 2022, expressed support for abolishing police, prisons, and borders, as well as seizing private property and nationalizing major industries.

Controversial Social Media History

Avila Chevalier, endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, is challenging longtime Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat in New York’s 13th Congressional District. The primary, scheduled for June 23, is seen as a significant contest between the Democratic establishment and the rising democratic-socialist faction.

Reports have highlighted Avila Chevalier’s deleted posts, which included calls for open borders and zero deportations, as well as criticism of Israel’s right to exist. In one instance, she reposted a tweet suggesting that Israel does not exist, and in another, she declared that a world without borders, prisons, or police is necessary.

Response and Support

In response to the controversy, Avila Chevalier stated that the posts do not reflect her current views and accused her opponent of focusing on the past rather than addressing current district issues. Mayor Mamdani continues to support her, citing her advocacy for immigrants and working-class New Yorkers.

Avila Chevalier’s deleted posts also included references to communism and anti-capitalist politics. During the 2020 protests following George Floyd’s death, she advocated for abolishing the police entirely, rejecting any notion of merely reforming policing.

The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine preserved over 3,600 tweets from her account, with the last archived tweet dated May 2022. The account’s deletion date remains unclear.
