Seminole County Prepares for Hurricane Season with Emergency Drill

Seminole County’s emergency management team recently held its annual hurricane preparedness exercise to ensure the community is ready for the upcoming storm season. The exercise took place at the Emergency Operations Center, where the third floor was activated for the drill.

Community Collaboration

More than 40 partnering agencies participated in the exercise, simulating responses to potential hurricane-related challenges. This collaborative effort aims to enhance the county’s ability to manage emergencies effectively.

William White, chief engineer for utilities, highlighted the significant damage caused by past storms, particularly Hurricane Ian, which brought over 16 inches of rain and resulted in extensive flooding and water rescues. He emphasized that flooding remains a major concern for the county.

Innovative Solutions

Alan Harris, Seminole County emergency manager, discussed new services being introduced this year. These include a healthcare board to connect assisted living facilities and nursing homes, and a fuel station monitoring system to ensure residents can evacuate effectively during power outages.

Marie Lackey, roads and stormwater manager with the public works department, stressed the importance of preparing new staff to address storm-related issues. She assured residents that her team is ready to assist when needed.

Resident Preparedness

Residents are encouraged to update their disaster plans, stock their disaster kits, and sign up for emergency alerts through PrepareSeminole.org. These proactive measures are vital for ensuring personal safety and community resilience during hurricane season.
