In California, where small businesses drive the economy, candidates like Mark McComas are stepping forward to address pressing issues within the state’s tax system. His campaign highlights a need for fairness and accountability, especially for the 4.1 million small businesses that face challenges due to current tax policies. Speaking with Linda Szynkowicz on Sync-O-Wicz, McComas outlined his vision and experience, emphasizing reforms to protect businesses from undue burdens and fraud.

Understanding the Role

Mark McComas, a candidate for California’s Board of Equalization, is putting the spotlight on the agency that oversees fairness in tax policy within the state. During an interview with Linda Szynkowicz, he explained that the Board’s responsibilities include managing tax fairness for utilities, insurers, and the alcohol and beverage sectors. McComas’s district spans from the Oregon border to Ventura, including 19 counties. With such a vast area under his purview, McComas emphasizes the importance of transparency and fairness in tax administration.

A Background in Government

McComas brings to his candidacy a wealth of experience from his career in the federal government and banking. Having spent 17 years with the U.S. Small Business Administration and Department of Commerce, he has witnessed firsthand the impact of tax policies on small businesses. He stated, “I have worked with literally thousands of people, thousands of small businesses. So I have seen personally how the Franchise Tax Board really affects these small businesses.” His firsthand experience with the Franchise Tax Board’s appeal processes informs his campaign’s focus.

Proposals for Reform

Central to McComas’s platform is the extension of the 30-day period for responding to tax notices, which he proposes to increase to 60 days. This change aims to alleviate pressure on small businesses that struggle under tight deadlines. McComas recognizes the diverse and growing nature of California’s small business sector, noting the significant contribution of women-owned and Latino businesses to the state’s economy. His focus on fairness and integrity in tax matters is encapsulated in his acronyms, FAIR and VIT, representing fairness, accountability, integrity, respect, and the concept of “very important taxpayers.”

Addressing Fraud and Mismanagement

Fraud within federal programs is another area where McComas draws from his experience. He recounted instances of PPP fraud during the COVID-19 pandemic and the lack of action from management when he reported these issues. McComas’s commitment to tackling fraud is evident in his critique of existing measures and his call for greater accountability. He highlighted the work of individuals like Nick Shirley, who have exposed fraud despite risks, and criticized legislation that threatens investigative reporting.

The Path Forward

McComas’s candidacy represents a push for reform in California’s tax administration. His proposals aim to protect small businesses from undue burdens and enhance transparency. With his experience and commitment to accountability, McComas seeks to bring about meaningful change that supports the state’s economic engine. As he noted, “Fraud is theft of taxpayer dollars.” His campaign emphasizes the need for vigilance and integrity in handling public funds.
