21 U.S. Airports Now Allow Non-Ticketed Visitors to Access Gates

In a move reminiscent of pre-9/11 travel days, 21 airports across the United States now permit non-ticketed individuals to accompany their loved ones to the boarding gates. This initiative, aimed at enhancing the travel experience, allows visitors to apply for a pass that grants them access through airport security and into the terminal.

Reviving Old Traditions

Pittsburgh International Airport was a pioneer in this initiative with its myPITpass program, launched in 2017. Although the program was paused in 2020 due to the pandemic and subsequent terminal construction, it inspired other airports to adopt similar programs. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport followed suit in 2018, initially as a revenue-generating strategy but later evolving into a customer service enhancement.

The visitor pass programs are designed to support travelers who may need extra assistance, such as those with disabilities or language barriers. Rosa Johnson, manager of aviation customer communications at Seattle-Tacoma, noted that having a trusted companion can significantly ease the travel process for these individuals.

How It Works

To participate, visitors must apply online or at an airport kiosk, providing identification details and undergoing a security approval process. While most airports allow applications up to a week in advance, some, like San Francisco International Airport, permit applications up to 30 days prior. Once approved, visitors must pass through TSA security like regular passengers, though they are not eligible for expedited services like TSA Precheck.

Each airport has specific guidelines regarding visit duration and terminal access. For instance, Kansas City International and Philadelphia International limit visits to six hours, while others like San Antonio International allow unlimited time during operating hours. It’s crucial for visitors to check the specific rules of the airport they plan to visit.

Community and Industry Impact

The expansion of these programs reflects a broader trend of airports seeking to enhance customer experience and community engagement. By allowing non-ticketed individuals to access terminals, airports are fostering human connections and providing a more welcoming environment. This initiative also helps alleviate staffing pressures by enabling self-service options for travelers.

As the program continues to gain traction, airport officials like Johnson emphasize the importance of public awareness. Encouraging people to utilize these passes can transform airport visits into more meaningful and leisurely experiences, reinforcing the role of airports as hubs of connection and community.
