Hillhouse Students Gain Teaching Experience at King/Robinson School

In a unique educational initiative, Hillhouse High School sophomores Frishta Rasuli, Chaunte Eddy, and Isabelle Capuras took on the role of teachers for a day at King/Robinson School. The students, enrolled in Southern Connecticut State University’s EDU 200 teaching course, brought their classroom learning to life by teaching second graders how to identify a story’s main idea and supporting details.

Hands-On Learning Experience

Under the guidance of Hillhouse veteran educator Glenda Reyes, the students chose to read “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” with the second graders. This classic tale served as a tool to discuss important life lessons, such as the importance of integrity and respecting others’ property. The high schoolers emphasized reading over screen time, believing it fosters better learning.

Throughout the school year, the Hillhouse students observed various classrooms, gaining insights into effective teaching strategies. The experience culminated in this practical lesson, where they applied skills like patience and empathy, crucial for understanding and engaging students.

Reflections and Challenges

Despite not aspiring to become educators, the students found value in the skills they developed. Rasuli highlighted the importance of empathy in teaching, while Eddy noted the challenge of maintaining students’ focus. Capuras reflected on the difficulty of helping students overcome confusion without overwhelming them with assistance.

The lesson also included a social-emotional check-in, where students expressed their feelings using emojis. This approach helped the student-teachers connect with the second graders beyond academics, fostering a supportive learning environment.

Reyes praised her students for their adaptability and success in lesson planning and execution. She emphasized the importance of thinking on one’s feet, a skill valuable in any career path.
