Florida Lawmakers to Debate DeSantis’ Property Tax Proposal in Special Session

Florida lawmakers have convened in Tallahassee for a special session to deliberate on Governor Ron DeSantis’ ambitious proposal to reduce property taxes, with the ultimate goal of eliminating them for a significant portion of Florida homeowners. The proposal, unveiled last week, seeks to exempt up to $250,000 of a home’s taxable value for primary residences, known as homesteaded properties.

Details of the Proposal

Under this plan, a homeowner with a property valued at $400,000 would only pay taxes on $150,000 of the property’s value. Governor DeSantis has stated that this initiative could potentially eliminate property taxes for 60% of homeowners in the state. To assist homeowners in understanding potential savings, a new online calculator has been launched.

Concerns and Next Steps

While the proposal has garnered attention, it has also raised concerns among critics who question how cities will continue to fund essential services such as fire and police departments. In response, Governor DeSantis mentioned the establishment of a special trust fund to address these funding challenges.

Before the proposal can be presented to voters in the November ballot, it requires approval from at least three-fifths of both the Florida House and Senate. If it reaches the ballot, it would need a 60% voter approval to be enacted.
