Iowa Doctors Highlight Skin Cancer Risks as Summer Begins

In Des Moines, Iowa, local doctors are raising awareness about the dangers of skin cancer as summer begins. With the conclusion of the school year, families are spending more time outdoors, increasing their exposure to the sun, the primary cause of skin cancer.

Understanding the Risks

Dr. Richard Deming from MercyOne highlights the risks associated with ultraviolet exposure, not only from the sun but also from tanning beds. He stresses that melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, often develops from pigmented lesions like moles and can be fatal if not addressed promptly.

According to Dr. Deming, Iowa faces a significant cancer challenge, with the state having the second-highest cancer rates in the nation. Melanoma ranks as the fifth most common new cancer in Iowa, underscoring the need for vigilance and prevention.

Prevention Is Key

Dr. Deming advises using protective clothing, such as wide-brim hats and lightweight garments that cover the skin, as the best defense against harmful UV rays. While sunscreen is beneficial, he notes that it should be used in conjunction with protective clothing for optimal safety. Sunscreen with at least SPF 50 is recommended, and reapplication is crucial, especially after swimming or sweating.

He also encourages individuals to monitor their skin for any changes, particularly looking out for lesions that grow quickly, develop ulcerations, or have uneven borders. Early detection and reporting concerns to a healthcare provider can significantly reduce health risks.

As families enjoy the summer months, prioritizing skin health and taking preventive measures can help mitigate the risks of skin cancer, ensuring a safer and healthier season for all.
