California’s Governor and LA Mayor Races Head to Uncertain Primaries

As California approaches its primary elections, the races for governor and Los Angeles mayor are marked by uncertainty, with outsider candidates challenging the established Democratic hierarchy. In the governor’s race, former Fox News host Steve Hilton is urging Republicans to consolidate support behind him to secure a spot in the November election. He faces competition from Democrats Tom Steyer, a billionaire climate activist, and Xavier Becerra, a former state attorney general.

Los Angeles Mayoral Race

In Los Angeles, the mayoral race is equally competitive. Reality TV personality Spencer Pratt is running an insurgent campaign against Democratic Mayor Karen Bass. Pratt, who lost his home in the 2025 Palisades Fire, has focused his campaign on the city’s recovery efforts. Bass, meanwhile, is defending her record, pointing to a decrease in homelessness, though challenges remain.

The race is officially nonpartisan, but Bass and Nithya Raman, a progressive city council member, are both Democrats. Pratt, a registered Republican, has received informal support from former President Donald Trump but emphasizes local issues over national politics.

Governor’s Race Dynamics

The governor’s race is wide open, with over 50 candidates on the ballot. With Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom term-limited, the field includes former Democratic U.S. Rep. Katie Porter and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, alongside Republican Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco. Hilton warns of a “doomsday scenario” where only Democrats advance, potentially impacting GOP turnout statewide.

As mail voting continues, with only 15% of ballots returned by Sunday, candidates see potential for last-minute shifts. The outcome of these races could significantly influence California’s political landscape, affecting congressional and legislative contests in November.
