Unauthorized Fireworks Cause Horse Stampede in Rome, Injuring Soldiers

In a startling incident in Rome, unauthorized fireworks set off during a late-night rehearsal for Italy’s Republic Day parade caused a mass stampede of horses. The event, which took place near the historic Baths of Caracalla, resulted in injuries to multiple soldiers and horses.

Incident Details

The chaos unfolded as mounted units from Italy’s armed forces and law enforcement agencies were preparing for the June 2 national celebration. Approximately 35 horses were spooked by the unexpected fireworks, leading them to bolt through the city streets. The stampede was captured on video, showing the horses galloping along Via Cristoforo Colombo.

The recovery efforts extended until dawn, with the last horse being found about nine miles from the initial scene. The fireworks reportedly began shortly before 11:30 p.m., causing panic among the ceremonial horses, many of which were being escorted by Italy’s Army, Carabinieri paramilitary police, and state police.

Injuries and Investigation

During the incident, a 22-year-old soldier suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung, although his injuries were not life-threatening. At least 15 horses were injured, but none required euthanasia. Among the injured were three young soldiers from the Montebello Lancers and a 29-year-old policewoman.

Officials are investigating how the unauthorized fireworks were ignited near the rehearsal site. The Rome Local Police Command reported that four traffic police officers were involved, with one officer allegedly lighting a battery of fireworks about 200 yards from the horses. This officer has been identified as a 50-year-old who recently joined the force.

Rome police commander Mario De Sclavis expressed concern over the incident, stating it discredits the image of the Corps and its officers. He assured that necessary measures would be taken to hold those responsible accountable.
