Mayfair police shooting of Jamir Cave investigated; officers placed on administrative duty

Philadelphia police released new details on Tuesday about the fatal shooting of 26‑year‑old Jamir Cave in the Mayfair neighborhood. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 2 after multiple 911 calls reported a man attempting to enter homes on the 4100 block of Tyson Avenue.

Sequence of events

Officers located Cave and tried to stop him. He fled on foot along Frankford Avenue, prompting a chase that ended on the 7000 block of the same street. According to investigators, Cave was holding a kitchen‑style knife with the blade pointed forward during the confrontation.

Video evidence shows an officer attempting to create distance but falling backward in the driveway of a storage facility. Cave then turned toward a second officer and advanced while still holding the knife. At that point, both officers—Thomas Catalano, a 12‑year veteran, and Christian Nguyen, with three years of service—opened fire, striking and killing Cave. The officer who fell suffered an elbow injury; no other injuries were reported.

Witness and family statements

Witnesses said they saw a man running up and down Frankford Avenue and heard an officer repeatedly yell, “Drop the knife,” before hearing gunfire. Cave’s mother, Ebony Boyd, called her son “innocent,” while his aunt, Moico Boyd, said a neighbor had called police because Cave was drinking water in her yard.

Family members disclosed that Cave had been dealing with mental‑health issues and had been released from Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital earlier that day. They also claimed they reported him missing to police before the shooting, but say officers never responded.

Police response and investigation

Philadelphia Police Department confirmed that body‑camera footage was captured during the incident. Both officers have been assigned to administrative duty pending the outcome of the internal investigation. The department emphasized that the use‑of‑force review will follow standard procedures and that any findings will be made public.

City officials have reiterated their commitment to transparent policing and to addressing community concerns about law‑enforcement interactions, especially in neighborhoods facing mental‑health challenges. The investigation will consider all available evidence, including video, witness testimony, and the officers’ statements.

Context and next steps

This shooting adds to ongoing discussions in Philadelphia about police practices, mental‑health crisis response, and community safety. City leaders have previously advocated for expanded crisis‑intervention resources and training for officers to de‑escalate situations involving individuals with mental‑health issues.

The investigation is expected to take several weeks. Updates will be provided as the department completes its review and any recommendations are issued.
