New Jersey Governor Faces Criticism Over State Police at ICE Protests

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has come under criticism from left-wing commentator Hasan Piker for her handling of protests outside an ICE detention facility in Newark. Piker, a Marxist political commentator and Twitch streamer, accused Sherrill of supporting the Trump administration’s immigration agenda by deploying state police to manage the protests.

State Police Deployment

Governor Sherrill defended her decision to deploy state police around the demonstrations at Delaney Hall, an ICE detention center, stating that she aimed to prevent unrest from escalating into a pretext for expanded federal immigration operations in the state. ‘I refuse to let that happen in New Jersey. I will not give ICE a pretext,’ Sherrill said in a statement aired during a news segment.

Piker, however, mocked Sherrill’s explanation during his livestream, suggesting that her actions effectively aligned with federal immigration enforcement. ‘That’s basically what the meta is here for this blue state and its new blue governor,’ he commented.

Broader Criticism

Piker extended his criticism to the broader Democratic Party, accusing its centrist wing of complicity in immigration enforcement policies. He highlighted allegations of poor conditions at the detention facility, which the Department of Homeland Security has disputed. Piker claimed that state troopers were acting in concert with federal policies, describing their presence as ‘brutalizing New Jerseyans.’

He also alleged mistreatment of journalists covering the protests, citing an incident involving an Associated Press photographer. Piker’s criticism included a call for political change, urging viewers to support candidates who oppose current immigration policies.

Political Context

Piker’s comments come amid ongoing anti-ICE demonstrations at Delaney Hall, where activists have raised concerns about detainee treatment. His criticism reflects broader tensions within the Democratic Party over immigration policy, as some members have supported related legislation and funding measures.

In addition to his commentary, Piker has been active in political campaigning, supporting candidates endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America. He has previously campaigned for New Jersey congressional candidate Adam Hamamy, who has faced media scrutiny over his background.

Governor Sherrill’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the criticism.
