Yorktown, Indiana – A tragic loss struck the local community early Monday morning when 17‑year‑old Yorktown High School football player Chris Wilson Jr. was shot multiple times while riding in a car with his girlfriend in Muncie.
Wilson, a 6‑foot‑5, 235‑pound defensive end, was among the most highly recruited athletes in the state. He had offers from more than a dozen colleges and had committed to play at West Virginia University, planning to graduate early before joining the Mountaineers.
Family remembers the “Big One”
Wilson’s family described him as a humble, hard‑working young man who never sought the spotlight that came with his football success. His stepfather, Derrick Price, said, “Chris didn’t speak about greatness. Chris didn’t care about greatness. Chris came out to do his job.” Wilson’s mother, Tywanna Price, recalled his excitement about the next chapter of his life, noting, “I asked him, ‘Big One, how do you feel about leaving?’ He said, ‘I’m just ready for my next chapter.’”
Teammates and coaches mourn
Teammate Grayson Diaz remembered Wilson’s encouragement, saying, “He’d see you walking with your head down, and he’d motivate you to bring your head up every day.” West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez expressed that his program is “heartbroken” by the loss of a promising recruit.
Police investigation
Muncie police have released few details about the shooting and have not identified a suspect or motive. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Call for community help
Wilson’s family is asking anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact law enforcement. “If you know anything, reach out,” Derrick Price said. “We’re sick. We’re grieving hard.”
