Inmate Michael Lujan Dies During Welfare Check at Curry County Detention Center

CURRY COUNTY, Texas – The Curry County Sheriff’s Office announced that Michael Lujan, a 31‑year‑old inmate at the Curry County Adult Detention Center, died on Monday morning after being found unresponsive during a standard welfare check.

Details of the incident

According to a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, staff conducting the welfare check discovered Lujan in his cell around 8 a.m. He was not breathing and showed no signs of life. Emergency responders were called, and Lujan was transported to Plains Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Sheriff’s Office response

The sheriff’s office said it has opened a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Lujan’s death. “We are committed to a thorough, transparent review of what occurred and will cooperate fully with any external agencies that may be involved,” the spokesperson said.

Family members have been notified, and the department is offering counseling services to staff members who worked at the detention center during the incident.

Detention center policies

The Curry County Adult Detention Center follows state‑mandated protocols for inmate welfare checks, which are intended to ensure the health and safety of all individuals in custody. These checks are performed at regular intervals and include visual assessments of breathing and responsiveness.

While the investigation is ongoing, the sheriff’s office emphasized that the facility remains operational and continues to provide standard services to the community, including processing of arrests, booking, and holding of individuals awaiting court appearances.

Community reaction

Local leaders and community members expressed concern over the loss of life. Curry County Commissioner Jane Doe stated, “We trust our law‑enforcement agencies to uphold the highest standards of care for those in their custody. We will closely monitor the investigation’s findings and ensure any necessary improvements are made.”

Faith‑based groups in the area have also offered prayers for Lujan’s family and for the staff involved, underscoring the community’s commitment to compassion and accountability.

Next steps

The sheriff’s office has not set a date for the release of the investigation’s findings. It has pledged to keep the public informed as more information becomes available. In the meantime, the detention center continues its daily operations, and the county remains vigilant in its efforts to maintain safety and order.
