Staying Safe in the Heat: Tips for Northwest Arkansas Residents

With the summer heat intensifying in Northwest Arkansas and the River Valley, local health professionals are emphasizing the importance of staying hydrated and employing effective cooling methods when spending time outdoors. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that approximately 2,000 Americans succumb to heat-related illnesses annually.

Understanding Heat-Related Illnesses

Heat cramps and exhaustion occur when the body heats up faster than it can cool down, or when there is a significant loss of fluids or salt through sweating. To combat overheating, the CDC recommends moving to a shaded area and sipping water. Recognizing the symptoms of heatstroke is crucial, as it can be life-threatening. Symptoms include confusion, altered mental status, slurred speech, loss of consciousness, hot dry skin or excessive sweating, seizures, and a very high body temperature. In such cases, it is vital to call 911 immediately.

Protecting Your Skin

Reapplying sunscreen every two hours is essential to shield your skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet B rays, which can cause sunburns and increase the risk of skin cancer. The CDC advises that UV rays are typically strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. When the UV index reaches 3 or higher, using sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher is recommended.

By taking these precautions, residents of Northwest Arkansas can enjoy the summer weather while minimizing the risks associated with extreme heat.
