What Does a Record Shop Sound Like at 10 a.m.?

What does a record shop sound like when it’s just opened and the first customer of the day is still figuring out where to start? At Calico Records on Main Street in downtown Ventura, it sounds like a needle dropping on something you recognize but can’t quite name — maybe a mid-period Coltrane record, maybe a Talking Heads B-side — while the owner moves around behind the counter doing the quiet administrative work of running a small business that people actually love.

Calico has been a fixture on Main for years now, holding its own through a stretch of downtown that’s seen shops come and go. It’s a real record store in the original sense: used and new vinyl, organized well enough to browse but not so sterile that it feels like a library. The bins are deep. The sections make sense. And unlike a lot of independent shops that feel curated for a specific kind of customer, Calico seems to have vinyl for everyone — jazz, punk, classic rock, soul, country, soundtracks, and local acts you’ve probably never heard of but should.

If you’re new to Ventura or just passing through and find yourself on Main Street on a weekend morning, this is the kind of stop that can swallow an hour without you noticing. Flipping through the used section, you’ll find records priced anywhere from a few dollars for common pressings up to $20–30 for something rarer or in exceptional shape. New releases run standard retail. The staff — and it’s a small staff — actually know the stock, which sounds like a low bar but isn’t anymore.

The shop is narrow and well-lit, with listening stations and a layout that lets you move through sections without feeling like you’re elbowing anyone. On a busy Saturday afternoon it can get tight, but the crowd tends to be people actually looking for music, not just browsing as an activity. That changes the vibe in a good way.

If you’re a collector, bring a list or a phone full of wants — the selection turns over regularly and there’s no predicting what surfaces. If you’re more of a casual browser, give yourself permission to skip the sections you know and spend time in the ones you don’t. The soundtrack, curated bin, or staff picks section near the front is always worth a look. Whoever is pulling those tends to have good taste without being precious about it.

Parking on Main can be tight on weekends, but street parking a block or two off Main Street usually opens up. The shop is walkable from most of downtown, so if you’re already out — at the Farmers Market, grabbing lunch, whatever — it’s an easy detour. Hours are generally daytime through early evening; check their social accounts before you make a special trip because hours have varied seasonally.

In a town with decent food options and obvious outdoor draws, Calico is the kind of place that quietly earns its spot on the list of reasons people like Ventura. It’s not competing with the beach or the harbor. It’s just doing what a good record store does — playing something good and staying open.
