Plymouth County trial of Lindsay Clancy ends in mistrial after deadlocked jury

In Plymouth, Massachusetts, a jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision in the murder trial of former labor‑and‑delivery nurse Lindsay Clancy, resulting in a mistrial declared by Judge William Sullivan on September 4, 2026. The case, which centers on the deaths of Clancy’s three young children in January 2023, has drawn national attention to the complexities of postpartum mental‑health disorders and the legal standards for an insanity defense.

Timeline of events

Clancy gave birth to her third child in May 2022 while living in Duxbury with her husband, Patrick, and their three children, Cora, Dawson and Callan. By September 2022 she was seeing psychiatrist Dr. Jennifer Tufts via telehealth for anxiety, depression and insomnia, and was prescribed a range of medications over the next several months.

On December 31, 2022, Clancy was admitted to McLean Hospital after reporting suicidal thoughts and intrusive urges to harm her children. She was released five days later to attend her daughter’s birthday party. In late January 2023, Clancy told Dr. Tufts she was “doing all right” and denied any suicidal or homicidal ideation.

On the night of January 24, 2023, while Patrick was out picking up dinner and medication, Clancy strangled her three children with exercise bands in the basement, then cut her own wrists and neck and jumped from a second‑floor window. Patrick returned home to discover the scene and called 911. Clancy survived, was partially paralyzed, and wrote on a piece of paper that she was “horrified” and requested an attorney.

During her hospital stay she reported hearing a persistent male voice urging her to kill her children and herself. She was arraigned on murder charges on February 7, 2023, and pleaded not guilty. The case proceeded to trial in July 2026, with opening statements on July 26. Prosecutors argued Clancy acted intentionally and rationally, while the defense asserted she suffered from postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings.

Trial proceedings and public response

The prosecution called more than 70 witnesses, including family members, first responders, investigators and medical providers. The defense presented psychiatric experts who testified that Clancy was experiencing postpartum psychosis. On August 20, more than 100 people wearing pink demonstrated outside Plymouth Superior Court to raise awareness for maternal mental‑health care.

After closing arguments on August 27, the jury deliberated for four days. On September 1, the jury reported it could not reach a unanimous verdict, prompting the judge to order continued deliberations. By September 4, the jury remained deadlocked, with a single holdout juror preventing a unanimous decision. The judge declared a mistrial.

Next steps

Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz said the prosecution will decide shortly whether to retry the case. A hearing is scheduled for November 2, 2026, to address pending motions. Meanwhile, Patrick Clancy, now remarried, spoke publicly about the tragedy on “60 Minutes,” emphasizing his effort to live with the outcome.

The case continues to spark discussion among legal experts, mental‑health professionals and advocates for mothers facing postpartum disorders. It underscores the challenges courts face when evaluating criminal responsibility in the context of severe mental‑health crises.
