Westfield‑Washington Schools Hosts First ‘Drive the Bus’ Hiring Event

Westfield, IN – In a practical effort to address the district’s driver shortage, Westfield‑Washington Schools held its inaugural “Drive the Bus” hiring event on Saturday at the Transportation Center on Towne Road. The hands‑on showcase gave community members a chance to sit in a school bus, drive around the facility and ask questions of the district’s training team.

Making the Job Accessible

Director of Transportation Michael Reinhardt told FOX59 the goal was to demystify the role. “Driving a school bus can seem intimidating until you actually get behind the wheel,” Reinhardt said. He added that the event also let applicants meet the transportation staff and decide whether the position fits their lives and families.

“This event gives people a chance to try it in a comfortable environment, ask questions, meet our team, and see if it might be the right fit for them,” Reinhardt explained.

No Experience Required

The district emphasized that prior school‑bus experience is not a prerequisite. Westfield‑Washington Schools provides paid training so new drivers can earn the necessary credentials, including a commercial driver’s license, a physical exam and safety education. Once certified, drivers complete on‑bus training and written and driving tests before taking students to school.

Impact on the Community

With a fleet of 139 buses transporting more than 10,500 students across a 56‑square‑mile area, the district relies on safe, reliable transportation. The buses collectively travel over 958,000 miles each year, underscoring the importance of a stable driver workforce. By inviting locals to experience the job first‑hand, the district hopes to attract responsible, family‑oriented individuals who value community service.

How to Apply

Anyone interested in becoming a driver can complete an application on the district’s website or pick up a paper form at the Transportation Center. State requirements include a valid driver’s license, a physical examination and a commercial driver’s license. The district’s paid training program helps new hires meet these standards while earning a steady wage.

Supporting Safe Transportation for Families

Reinhardt noted that the event aligns with the district’s broader mission to provide safe, dependable transportation for thousands of families. By lowering the barrier to entry and offering a supportive, hands‑on introduction, Westfield‑Washington Schools aims to keep buses staffed with qualified drivers who understand the responsibility of safely moving children to and from school each day.

The “Drive the Bus” event reflects a community‑first approach, inviting local residents to consider a career that supports families, upholds safety standards, and strengthens the fabric of Westfield’s schools.
