Israel Captures Strategic Castle in Deepest Lebanon Incursion in 26 Years

In a significant military maneuver, Israeli forces have captured the Beaufort castle, a strategic site in southern Lebanon. This marks Israel’s deepest incursion into Lebanon in 26 years, as the conflict with Hezbollah continues to escalate. The castle, perched atop a mountain near the city of Nabatiyeh, was taken after several days of intense combat and airstrikes in the surrounding villages.

Historical and Strategic Significance

Beaufort castle, originally built by Crusaders, holds both historical and strategic importance. Israeli troops previously captured the site in 1982, maintaining control until their withdrawal in 2000. The recent capture is part of Israel’s broader military operation aimed at dismantling Hezbollah’s infrastructure and eliminating threats to Israeli civilians.

The Israeli military’s actions come despite a ceasefire that has been nominally in place since April 17. The operation has seen Israeli forces crossing the Litani River, which had served as a de facto boundary, and advancing towards key locations such as Nabatiyeh and Tyre. The military has declared the area between the Litani and Zahrani rivers a combat zone, urging residents to evacuate.

Current Conflict Dynamics

The ongoing Israel-Hezbollah war, which began in early March, has resulted in significant casualties and displacement. Over 3,350 people have died in Lebanon, with more than a million displaced. On the Israeli side, 25 soldiers and a defense contractor have been killed, along with two civilians in northern Israel, primarily due to drone attacks.

Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for several attacks on Israeli troops, including targeting a Merkava tank near the border. The group has been using fiber optic drones to launch attacks, complicating Israel’s military operations.

As the conflict intensifies, Israel and Lebanon are engaged in direct talks in Washington, with the next round scheduled for June 2 and 3. The outcome of these discussions remains uncertain as military actions continue on the ground.
