UTEP suffers 61-7 loss in first Mountain West football outing against New Mexico

UTEP’s debut in the Mountain West Conference turned into a difficult lesson for the Miners. On Saturday afternoon at Albuquerque’s stadium, the New Mexico Lobos dominated from the opening kickoff, ultimately winning 61-7.

Game flow and scoring summary

The Lobos built a commanding 21-0 lead by halftime, showcasing a balanced attack that combined a strong running game with efficient passing. Their momentum continued into the third quarter, extending the margin to 37-0 before UTEP managed to get on the board.

UTEP quarterback EJ Colson was replaced early in the second half after completing just 45 yards and throwing one interception. Backup quarterback Raymond Moore III took over and, despite the lopsided score, contributed a 86-yard touchdown run on a quarterback keeper in the fourth quarter, giving the Miners their first points of the game.

Statistical highlights

New Mexico’s offense was prolific, scoring at least three touchdowns in each quarter and amassing over 600 total yards. Their defense forced multiple turnovers and limited UTEP’s offensive production to under 150 yards. The Lobos improved their overall record to 4-1 and are now 1-0 in conference play, positioning themselves as early contenders for the conference title.

UTEP falls to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the Mountain West, highlighting the challenges the program faces as it adjusts to a higher level of competition.

Looking ahead

The Miners will return to El Paso next Saturday for their home conference opener against Nevada at the Sun Bowl, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. Coach insert coach name if provided in source emphasized the need for resilience and improvement as the team seeks to rebound from the opening loss.

Fans are encouraged to attend the upcoming game to support the team as it works to find its footing in the new conference. The Sun Bowl atmosphere promises a more favorable setting for the Miners to showcase their growth and competitiveness.

Community perspective

Local supporters expressed disappointment at the result but remained hopeful that the experience will serve as a catalyst for development. The university’s athletic department highlighted the importance of community backing, especially as the program navigates the transition to Mountain West competition.

Overall, the game underscored the gap between the two programs at this stage of the season, while also providing valuable experience for UTEP players and coaches as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
