Lake Eola Walk Raises Funds for Alzheimer’s Research and Families

On Saturday morning, the Lake Eola park in Orlando became a gathering place for families, volunteers, and community members who joined the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The event, sponsored by local broadcasters WESH 2 and CW18, aimed to raise funds for research and to provide resources for those living with the disease and their caregivers.

Personal Stories Drive the Cause

George Diaz, a longtime volunteer who lost his mother to Alzheimer’s in 2009, described the day as “bittersweet but very much an empowering day.” He noted recent progress, saying, “They are making strides in terms of not only testing but finally finding drugs that will at least slow down the progression of it.”

Volunteer Connie Kulp walked in memory of her father‑in‑law, who was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2016. “I walk for my father‑in‑law,” Kulp said. “My mother‑in‑law will tell you the things she misses the most as being able to have a conversation with her husband, to talk about their day, talk about any issues or good things, and because he just doesn’t understand any of that.”

Colors of Hope

Participants carried flowers in four colors, each representing a different connection to the cause: blue for those living with Alzheimer’s, purple for those who have lost someone, yellow for caregivers, and orange for supporters. The visual display underscored the community’s collective commitment to the fight against dementia.

Alzheimer’s Landscape

The Alzheimer’s Association reports that more than seven million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia. The disease can begin years before symptoms appear, and current medications are most effective in the early stages. Kulp emphasized the importance of early detection, stating, “The earlier you find out, the better.”

Looking Ahead

Funds raised during the walk will support ongoing research aimed at slowing disease progression and will help expand resources for families navigating the challenges of caregiving. Organizers hope that the growing community involvement will continue to drive both awareness and scientific breakthroughs.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Lake Eola demonstrates how local faith, family values, and individual liberty converge to support a cause that touches countless households across Central Florida.
