Fireworks Cause Chaos at Rome Parade Rehearsal, Injuring Riders and Horses

In a startling incident in Rome, a traffic policeman’s unauthorized use of fireworks during a late-night rehearsal for Italy’s Republic Day parade led to chaos as dozens of ceremonial horses bolted through the city. The incident occurred shortly before 11:30 p.m. on Friday, causing panic among the horses, some of which were mounted while others were being led by hand.

Incident Details

The fireworks were set off near the ancient Baths of Caracalla, where mounted units from the army, Carabinieri paramilitary force, and police were preparing for the annual June 2 parade. The unexpected loud noises startled the horses, causing around 35 of them to flee onto the busy Via Cristoforo Colombo. Some drivers captured videos of the horses galloping down the road, and the last horse was recovered at dawn approximately 14 kilometers (9 miles) from the scene.

Several riders were thrown from their horses, resulting in injuries. A 22-year-old soldier suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung, though his condition was not life-threatening. Additionally, around 15 horses sustained injuries, but none were euthanized.

Official Response

Mario De Sclavis, commander of Rome’s police force, expressed concern over the incident, stating that it discredits the image of the Corps and its officers. The fireworks were reportedly set off by a municipal policeman from the traffic emergency unit, approximately 200 meters from the horses.

This incident highlights the importance of adhering to safety protocols, especially during public events involving animals and large crowds. As the city prepares for the Republic Day celebrations, officials are likely to review security measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
