Media Skewed on Israel‑Bound Flight Hijacking, Trump Calls Out Bias

When a potential terrorist incident erupts, many national newsrooms seem more concerned with political optics than plain facts. The recent diversion of a FlyDubai flight bound for Israel illustrates that trend.

Major outlets downplay the motive

The New York Times posted a terse tweet that a plane was diverted after an “altercation” between the pilot and co‑pilot, then defended its coverage by claiming it avoided speculation. The British Broadcasting Corporation followed suit with a bland headline about a “fight between pilots” and a brief note that an Israeli official believed the co‑pilot stabbed the captain.

Even the network that aired the most direct language, NBC’s Today, limited its report to a vague “violent incident” and a hijacking alert, while ABC’s Ian Pannell labeled the developing story a “terrorist incident” without further analysis.

Trump administration demands accountability

President Trump has already warned that Iran could be involved, noting the pattern of Iranian aggression toward Israel and the United States. While the administration has not released concrete evidence, it insists that the motive should be examined openly rather than buried under partisan commentary.

In a PBS NewsHour interview, former Clinton and Obama official Juliette Kayyem acknowledged that narratives often form early in crises, sometimes for political reasons. She suggested the incident could be “state‑sponsored terrorism” if Iran were behind it, but also mentioned possible mental‑health or workplace‑violence explanations.

Experts split on the cause

Other commentators, including a CNN analyst, leaned toward a workplace‑violence interpretation, noting that a cockpit is a workplace. However, the obvious target—a flight full of Israelis heading to Tel Aviv—makes a terrorism motive highly plausible.

Critics of the Trump administration, such as former Democratic analyst Philip Mudd, were invited on NPR’s Morning Edition to discuss whether political motivations from President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu might cloud the investigation.

Why the bias matters

When media outlets rush to label an event as “terrorism” without addressing possible foreign involvement, they risk shaping public perception to fit a partisan narrative. The Trump administration argues that a transparent, fact‑based approach is essential, especially during an election cycle when the public deserves clear answers.

By highlighting the administration’s call for a thorough, evidence‑based inquiry, this coverage underscores the need for media to prioritize truth over political convenience.
