Elise Murray, a senior from Willard High School, capped off her high school track career with a remarkable performance at the MSHSAA Class 5 state track and field meet held at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City. Murray, who will be attending Drury University in the fall, set a new school record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.90 seconds, earning her a fourth-place finish. This achievement follows her sixth-place finish as a sophomore and missing the podium as a junior.
Murray also competed in the 200-meter dash, finishing seventh with a time of 24.89 seconds, just shy of her personal best of 24.73 seconds set during the sectional championship the previous week.
Bria Wright’s Impressive Hurdling
Bria Wright of Ozark High School also ended her high school career on a high note. Wright, who will join the Wichita State Shockers in the fall, earned five Class 5 state medals throughout her high school career. At the state meet, she placed third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.68 seconds and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.58 seconds. Wright, who comes from a family of accomplished athletes, also holds Ozark’s long-jump record, although she narrowly missed the podium in that event with a ninth-place finish.
Other Notable Performances
Hillcrest sophomore Sa’Niya Johnson broke her own school record in the Class 4 400-meter dash, finishing fourth with a time of 57.99 seconds. Johnson had previously set a school record at the state sectional meet with a time of 58.1 seconds.
Other medalists included Nixa senior Avery Muniz, who placed fifth in the discus, and Logan-Rogersville freshman Amelia Fawcett, who placed fifth in the Class 4 high jump. Nixa senior Olivia Reed placed sixth in the Class 5 long jump and contributed to an eighth-place finish in the 4×200 relay. Ozark sophomore Lola Kensinger and Glendale sophomore Sylayah Davis also earned top-eight finishes in their respective events.
