Leaf‑peeping season is in full swing across New England, and meteorologists say the region is poised for some of the most vivid autumn colors seen in recent years. NBC10 Boston meteorologist Tevin Wooten spoke with avid photographer and foliage enthusiast Jack Cohen, who is currently in Vermont and has amassed a following of 170,000 on Instagram.
Vibrant reds and oranges dominate the landscape
“Through the White Mountains and mostly the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, I’ve seen probably the best color in at least five years, probably since 2022,” Cohen said. “It’s really the reds that are the superstar of the fall so far. They are really, really vibrant. The maples on the mountainsides and hillsides are just explosive with color. But the oranges have also really popped well.”
Cohen added that the leaves are holding on longer than usual, which he described as “a real positive” for leaf‑peepers hoping to catch the peak.
Where to go for the best views
Both Wooten and Cohen recommend heading to the mountains and notches of New Hampshire this weekend. Wooten expects “moderate to high color” in spots such as Franconia Notch and North Conway, with the most intense displays erupting between this weekend and the following one.
NBC10 Boston meteorologist Pete Bouchard echoed the optimism, noting that northern New England is “really coming on brilliantly.” He said that even in Massachusetts, “some vibrant colors are being seen in spots,” and that the region should be near its peak by the second week of October, with the weekend offering prime viewing conditions.
Plan your road trip
With clear skies and mild temperatures forecasted, now is an ideal time for a scenic drive to take in the foliage. Travelers are encouraged to check local road conditions and park availability, as popular spots can fill quickly during peak weeks.
Whether you’re a seasoned leaf‑peeper or a first‑time visitor, the combination of striking reds, bright oranges, and lingering leaves promises a memorable autumn experience across Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
