Fresno ArtHop panel recalls highway construction that displaced historic neighborhoods

During Thursday evening’s ArtHop, the Fresno community gathered to hear firsthand accounts of the city’s freeway era and its lasting impact on neighborhoods that once thrived before the concrete ribbons cut through them. The event, co‑hosted by Fresnoland, the Central Valley Community Foundation and Fresno DRIVE, was part of the “Facing Fresno” initiative, which seeks to explore the legacy of racism and displacement in the Central Valley.

Panelists recall a pre‑freeway Fresno

Long‑time resident Gwendalynn Morris, representing the San Joaquin Valley Black Communications Network, remembered the bustling streets that existed before the highways arrived. “They got rid of the housing and the businesses long before they put the freeways in,” Morris said, adding that the blight that plagued the area began prior to the road construction and only intensified when communities were torn apart.

Der Mugrdechian, a member of the Armenian Cultural Conservancy, recounted his father’s struggle to find work in the 1950s. “It took him five years from 1950 to 1955 to get hired because he was Armenian,” he explained, noting that the era’s discrimination shaped the immigrant experience for many families in Fresno.

Kathy Omachi, representing Fresno Chinatown Preservation, Inc., highlighted the solidarity among displaced groups. “The Armenian community was significant in assisting the Japanese American community when they were forced to relocate,” she said, noting that similar bonds formed with the African American community when they returned after World War II.

Why the history matters today

Organizers emphasized that understanding this history is essential for current efforts to build a more inclusive city. The “Facing Fresno” project aims to foster dialogue about how past policies—particularly those rooted in racial bias—continue to affect housing affordability, economic opportunity and community cohesion.

Panelist Morris stressed that acknowledging the pre‑freeway vibrancy of Fresno’s neighborhoods helps residents recognize what was lost and what can be reclaimed. “We need to remember that these were thriving communities, not empty lots awaiting development,” he said.

Der Mugrdechian added that the story of his father’s perseverance illustrates the broader immigrant contribution to Fresno’s growth, despite systemic obstacles. “Our families built this city even when the system tried to keep us out,” he asserted.

Community response and next steps

Attendees responded with a mixture of sorrow and hope, many expressing gratitude for the opportunity to hear these personal histories. The event concluded with a call for continued community engagement, urging residents to participate in upcoming town halls and oral‑history projects sponsored by the Central Valley Community Foundation.

Fresnoland’s labor and economy reporter Julianna Morano, who moderated the discussion, noted that the panel’s stories underscore the importance of preserving cultural landmarks and supporting policies that protect vulnerable neighborhoods from future displacement.

As Fresno looks toward future infrastructure projects, organizers hope the lessons from the 1950s freeway era will guide more equitable planning decisions, ensuring that new development enhances rather than erodes the city’s rich, multicultural heritage.
