The University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) Gauchos delivered a commanding performance in the Austin Regional, defeating Holy Cross 15-1 in an elimination game. This victory allows the Gauchos to advance and face the loser of the Tarleton State-Texas matchup on Sunday.
Record-Breaking Performance
Jackson Flora, the standout pitcher for the Gauchos, broke the UCSB single-season strikeout record, achieving 133 strikeouts and surpassing the previous record of 128 set by Rodney Boone in 2021. Flora’s impressive performance on the mound, allowing only one run on two hits over 7 2/3 innings, was a key factor in the team’s success. Flora now boasts a nation-leading 1.06 earned run average and an undefeated 12-0 season record.
Flora expressed gratitude for his team’s support, stating, “I can’t pitch every game, so I’m just glad my team got me this far into the season and I was glad to go out and help them win today.”
Offensive Surge
The Gauchos’ offense was equally impressive, with the team scoring their most runs ever in an NCAA Tournament game. The game was closely contested until the seventh inning when UCSB’s bats came alive, highlighted by a grand slam from catcher Nate Vargas. The team scored nine runs in the inning, turning a tense 3-1 lead into a decisive victory.
Xavier Esquer contributed significantly with a 4-for-5 performance and three RBIs, while Rowan Kelly added three hits and three RBIs. UCSB baseball coach Andrew Checketts praised the team’s effort, saying, “Fantastic effort by Jackson and the rest of the guys, grinding out some offense there. Took us a little while to get going but got going. Happy to get back in the win column and be here another day.”
