Naperville families and businesses have a new opportunity to responsibly dispose of foam packaging and other recyclable items. On Saturday, Oct. 3, a free community recycling event will run from 9 a.m. to noon at the Route 59 Station.
Who’s organizing
The Naperville Noon Lions Club and the Naperville Environment and Sustainability Taskforce (NEST) are co‑hosting the event. They are joined by the Naperville Park District and Dart Container, which will handle transportation of the collected foam to its processing facility in Michigan.
What can be brought
Organizers will accept a wide range of clean foam products, including:
- Styrofoam packing peanuts
- Foam trays and containers
- Insulated food containers
- Other clean, rigid foam items
All foam should be placed in clear plastic bags to streamline sorting. In addition to foam, the event will accept other recyclable materials such as cardboard, paper, and certain plastics, providing a one‑stop solution for household clean‑up.
What is not accepted
To keep the process efficient, the following items will not be taken:
- Food waste or contaminated foam
- Hazardous materials
- Large appliances or electronics
- Anything that does not fit the clear‑bag requirement
Why this matters
Foam packaging often ends up in landfills because many municipalities lack the infrastructure to recycle it. By partnering with Dart Container, the collected foam is shipped to a Michigan facility where it is processed and sold to manufacturers. The recycled material is then used in durable goods such as picture frames and crown molding, extending its life cycle and reducing waste.
Naperville has already hosted two foam‑collection events earlier this year—in April and July—making this the final collection of 2026. The consistent turnout at these events demonstrates strong community support for sustainable practices and aligns with the city’s broader environmental goals.
How to participate
Residents should gather their clean foam items, place them in clear bags, and arrive at the Route 59 Station during the designated hours. Volunteers from the Noon Lions and NEST will be on hand to answer questions, provide guidance on proper sorting, and ensure a smooth drop‑off experience.
For more information, volunteers can be reached through the Naperville Noon Lions Club website or the NEST social media pages.
Looking ahead
The success of this event sets the stage for future recycling initiatives in Naperville. Community leaders hope to expand the range of materials accepted and explore additional partnerships that keep more waste out of landfills while supporting local businesses that rely on recycled inputs.
