H-E-B, the renowned Texas-based grocery chain, is making strides towards opening its first store in the city of Dallas. The company has filed a construction permit for a new location at 635 and Hillcrest Road, marking a significant step in its expansion plans. Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2027, with the store’s grand opening projected for September 2028.
Community Concerns and Economic Impact
While the new store promises to bring economic benefits, including 800 jobs and an estimated $24 million in tax revenue over five years, some residents have expressed concerns. The primary issues raised by neighbors include potential increases in traffic congestion, noise pollution, and crime. H-E-B has responded by planning infrastructure improvements, such as adding turn lanes, to alleviate traffic concerns.
The development also highlights a broader discussion about the distribution of grocery stores in Dallas. While northern Dallas enjoys a variety of grocery options, southern Dallas continues to face challenges as a food desert. Despite these concerns, the rezoning request for the new H-E-B location passed with a 14-1 vote in December 2025.
In a statement, H-E-B expressed gratitude for the support from city officials and community members throughout the planning process. Benjamin Scott, Group Vice President of Real Estate and Shopping Center Development for H-E-B, emphasized the company’s commitment to serving Texans and contributing positively to the Dallas community.
