Peacock Alley Has Been Pouring Drinks Since Prohibition Ended

The Bismarck Event Center holds 10,000 people on a sold-out night — which means, depending on your timing, you could be sharing the building with a rodeo, a hockey game, a monster truck rally, and a country act all within the same calendar month. That range isn’t accidental. It’s the whole point of the place.

The facility sits on the north end of town off Divide Avenue, easy to spot from the highway and easier still to park at, which is more than you can say for arenas in cities three times Bismarck’s size. When you pull in on a busy Friday night and see the lot filling up, there’s a low-grade excitement to it — the kind you get when a city punches above its weight.

If you’ve never been to a Bismarck Bobcats game here, that’s where you should start. The Bobcats play in the North American Hockey League, and the vibe inside the arena on a home night is legitimately fun in a way that big-league games, with their corporate skyboxes and $18 beers, rarely manage anymore. You’re close to the ice. The crowd is loud for a mid-sized city crowd. Kids in jerseys press against the glass. Tickets run somewhere in the $10–20 range depending on the seat, and you can usually find parking for free or close to it if you arrive early.

Beyond hockey, the Event Center books a real calendar. Past seasons have brought in acts like Dierks Bentley, Garth Brooks, and a rotating cast of touring comedians. The building also hosts the Bismarck Larks, a summer collegiate baseball team that plays next door at Municipal Ballpark — worth its own separate night if you’ve got kids and want something slower-paced and genuinely cheap. But the Event Center itself is the draw when scale is what you need.

The concourse is functional rather than flashy. You’ll find the usual arena food — nachos, hot dogs, popcorn, cold beer — and it’s priced about where you’d expect, maybe slightly better than comparable venues in Minneapolis or Fargo. The sightlines from most of the seating are solid. There’s not a truly bad seat in the lower bowl. The upper sections get steep, but you’re close enough to the action that it never feels remote.

One thing worth knowing: the calendar here turns fast. An event that feels weeks away can sell out without much warning, especially for national acts that only come through once every year or two. It’s worth checking the schedule online before you assume tickets will be available. The box office is responsive and still takes walk-up buyers, but don’t count on that for anything with serious demand.

If you’re visiting Bismarck in winter and want an evening that feels like the city is actually alive, this is the answer. A Bobcats game on a Saturday night, a beer in your hand, a few thousand people cheering a clean breakaway — it’s the kind of thing that makes a mid-sized plains city feel like it has its own pulse. Which, to be clear, it does.
