Patrick Radden Keefe’s “London Falling” Joins Baillie Gifford Prize Shortlist

London – The prestigious Baillie Gifford Prize, Britain’s leading award for nonfiction, has revealed its shortlist for this year’s competition. Six titles are vying for the £50,000 prize, and among them is Patrick Radden Keefe’s new book London Falling. The work tells the true story of a teenager who lost his life after becoming entangled in the shadowy circles of London’s ultra‑wealthy.

Other finalists on the list

The remaining five finalists represent a broad range of subjects. Nicholas Boggs’ Baldwin: A Love Story offers a fresh look at the life of American writer James Baldwin. Matthew Sweet’s biography of romance novelist Barbara Cartland, titled The Great Dictator, explores the prolific author’s personal and professional world. Edmund Richardson presents a study of the ancient conqueror Alexander the Great in Alexander: God, King, Man. Andrea Wulf’s The Traveler follows the 18th‑century naturalist and explorer George Forster, while Anand Gopal’s Days of Love and Rage: A Story of Revolution recounts the Syrian uprising from the ground up.

Judges praise the eclectic selection

Journalist Kirsty Lang, who chairs the judging panel, said the shortlist offers “something for everyone.” She highlighted the variety of voices – from a romantic novelist and a civil‑rights activist to an ancient king and a modern‑day tragedy in London. Lang added that the collection is united by stories of individuals navigating conflict and hope.

The winner will be announced on November 4 at a ceremony in London. Since its founding in 1999, the Baillie Gifford Prize has recognized English‑language books across a wide spectrum of topics, including current affairs, history, politics, science, sport, travel, biography, autobiography and the arts. The award is credited with bringing fact‑based works to a broader readership.

Patrick Radden Keefe is no stranger to the prize; he previously won the Baillie Gifford Prize in 2021 for Empire of Pain, a detailed investigation of the Sackler family’s role in the United States opioid crisis. His latest effort continues his reputation for deep, investigative storytelling, shedding light on the darker side of wealth and its impact on vulnerable lives.
