High-end Birmingham boutique robbed of $100,000 in merchandise

In the early morning hours of September 17, a well‑known designer boutique on Pierce Street in downtown Birmingham was the target of a second burglary in two years. The Via Manzoni store, which carries luxury brands such as Prada, Gucci, Chanel and high‑end jackets, was cleared out of roughly 200 pieces, an estimated loss of at least $100,000.

Security footage shows a professional crew

Surveillance video captured the suspects forcing entry, quickly gathering handbags, purses, sunglasses and other high‑value items before fleeing the scene. The store sits directly across from the Birmingham Police Department, yet the thieves managed to silence the alarm system that the owner, Giulia Zhou, says includes multiple window sensors.

Owner’s response and past burglary

“I cannot believe that. It was the second time, you know? I never expected it would happen again to my store,” Zhou told reporters. She added that after the first burglary two years ago she invested in upgraded security measures, but the perpetrators appeared to be highly experienced, disabling the alarms despite the added layers.

Police have indicated the crew likely came from out of state, and the individuals responsible for the first robbery were never apprehended. The Birmingham Police Department has opened an investigation and is reviewing the footage for leads, but no arrests have been made at this time.

Impact on the boutique and community

Most of the stolen merchandise was from the current season, meaning replacement will be difficult and costly. Zhou said the store will remain closed while she assesses the damage and works with law enforcement. The loss not only affects the boutique’s bottom line but also removes a luxury shopping option from downtown Birmingham, a area that relies on such businesses to attract visitors and support local employment.

Local merchants expressed concern over the repeated thefts, noting that a pattern of high‑profile burglaries could deter shoppers and harm the downtown economy. “When a flagship store like this is hit, it sends a message to everyone else,” said a nearby shop owner who asked to remain anonymous.

Police advice for other retailers

Police officials urged other downtown businesses to review their security protocols, ensure alarms are regularly tested, and consider additional measures such as reinforced doors and real‑time monitoring. They also asked the public to report any suspicious activity, especially after dark, to help prevent further incidents.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information about the September 17 burglary is asked to contact the Birmingham Police Department at (555) 123‑4567.
