Galveston Firefighters Rescue Students from Stalled Roller Coaster

In a remarkable display of skill and coordination, Galveston firefighters successfully rescued eight students from a stalled roller coaster at the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier. The students, who were on a field trip organized by Energized for STEM Academy Middle and High Schools, found themselves stranded nearly 100 feet in the air when the Iron Shark roller coaster malfunctioned during its vertical climb.

Emergency Response

Galveston Fire Chief Mike Varela Jr. reported that emergency crews were dispatched around 5:30 p.m. after receiving reports of the stalled coaster. Firefighters utilized a ladder truck basket to individually lower each student, ensuring their safety with harnesses. Despite the ordeal, all students were unharmed, although they were understandably shaken by the experience.

Fire Chief Varela emphasized the importance of the firefighters’ skills in calming the students and ensuring their safety throughout the rescue operation. The students had been exposed to heat and sunlight for several hours, raising concerns about dehydration, which the rescue team carefully managed.

Challenges and Coordination

The rescue operation faced additional challenges when a piece of specialized high-angle rescue equipment malfunctioned. However, Capt. John Featherington noted that the crews quickly adapted their plans, ensuring each student was securely transferred from the coaster to the ladder truck basket. The meticulous process involved multiple safety checks to prevent any accidents during the transfer.

One of the students, experiencing her first roller coaster ride, expressed her initial reluctance to try such an attraction, highlighting the unexpected turn of events during what was meant to be an exciting day.

Amusement Park’s Response

Pleasure Pier officials explained that the ride stopped as designed after detecting a malfunction during its ascent, prioritizing the safety of the passengers. Terry Turney, Chief Operating Officer of Pleasure Pier, expressed gratitude towards the Galveston Fire Department for their swift response and assistance. The amusement park has initiated an inspection of the ride to prevent future incidents.

The Iron Shark roller coaster, known for its 100-foot vertical drop and speeds of up to 52 mph, will remain under review until safety assurances are confirmed. The successful rescue operation stands as a testament to the dedication and preparedness of local emergency services.
