Young Traveler from Johnson County Collects Over 100 Library Cards Nationwide

Aaralyn Yarsulik, a young resident of Johnson County, has embarked on a unique journey that combines her love for libraries with her family’s travels across the United States. At just 12 years old, Aaralyn has amassed a collection of over 100 library cards from various states, a testament to her passion for reading and exploration.

A Family Tradition of Learning

The Yarsulik family began their travels in 2020, setting out in an RV to explore national parks and historic sites across America. For Aaralyn, a devoted library-goer, the thought of leaving behind her beloved Johnson County Library was daunting. Her mother, Maci, turned this challenge into an opportunity by encouraging Aaralyn to collect library cards from each place they visited.

Now, six years later, Aaralyn’s collection is displayed at the Lenexa City Center Library, where it serves as a symbol of her adventures and the memories she has created along the way. Although many of the cards are inactive due to library policies, the collection represents the diverse experiences and knowledge she has gained.

Libraries as Classrooms

The Yarsulik family, who homeschool their four children, view libraries as both keepsakes and educational resources. Aaralyn’s love for books began early, having completed the “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” program. Her preference for physical books over digital formats highlights a traditional approach to learning that resonates with many families.

Throughout their travels, Aaralyn has visited libraries in 28 states, as well as in Canada and Mexico. She has experienced the grandeur of state libraries, the charm of small-town branches, and the architectural beauty of places like the Vancouver library. These visits have enriched her education, providing firsthand experiences of history and culture that many only read about in textbooks.

Unexpected Opportunities

Aaralyn’s library card collection has opened doors to unique experiences. She has toured prestigious institutions like the Library of Congress and the U.S. Senate Law Library, met Senator Jerry Moran, and even won a writing contest in Florida. Her adventures have included memorable moments such as being named an honorary librarian on her 10th birthday in South Carolina.

For Aaralyn, libraries are more than just buildings filled with books; they are gateways to discovery and learning. Her collection not only tells the story of her travels but also inspires others to explore their own interests and embrace the joy of learning.
