Study Shows Butterfly Wing Patterns Create Motion Illusions to Fool Predators

Scientists from the University of Exeter have discovered that the bold patterns on butterfly wings work together with the insects’ rapid wing movements to create visual tricks that can confuse predators. By flashing stripes in sync with the wingbeat, a butterfly can appear to move in a different direction than it actually is, buying crucial milliseconds to escape a bird’s strike.

How the illusion works

According to professor Jolyon Troscianko, the flexible wings of butterflies clap together and then fling apart in a figure‑of‑eight motion. During the down‑stroke, a stripe on the forewing slides slowly downward, while on the up‑stroke the same stripe folds away and aligns with the upward flight path. This contrast makes the downward motion more visible than the upward motion, even though the butterfly is climbing.

The effect is similar to the classic “barber‑pole” illusion, where moving stripes can be perceived as traveling in a different direction. The researchers used high‑speed video, computer modelling, simulated evolution and touchscreen experiments to test the phenomenon.

Human tests confirm confusion

In a series of virtual‑catching trials, 100 volunteers watched videos of butterflies and tried to tap the moving insects on a screen. Butterflies whose wing patterns were predicted to generate stronger visual confusion caused participants to aim farther behind the target, indicating that the illusion delayed accurate tracking.

While live‑bird experiments would be ideal, the team noted ethical constraints make such tests difficult. Nonetheless, the findings suggest that motion‑confusing wing patterns could be a key defensive strategy for many butterfly species.

Not all butterflies use the trick

Species with predominantly brown or red wings tend to rely more on camouflage or warning colours that signal toxicity, rather than motion dazzle. The researchers suspect that different survival strategies have evolved depending on the primary threats each species faces.

Potential broader applications

Because the neural circuits for motion detection are fundamental across vertebrates, the study’s insights may inform designs that improve safety in other contexts. Troscianko mentioned possible uses in flight simulators, combat training, vehicle camouflage, and even urban planning, where flashing or striped objects can cause visual discomfort.

Future work will explore how other predators, such as dragonflies and robber flies, perceive these patterns, given their faster visual systems.
