Pita House Has Fed Old Town for Decades, Quietly

Pita House on King Street has been open since 1982, which makes it older than most of the restaurants people drive across the bridge to eat at. It does not advertise this fact. There is no plaque, no anniversary banner, no Instagram presence to speak of. The place just keeps going.

The dining room is small — maybe a dozen tables — with hand-painted murals on the walls and lighting that stays dim even at noon. On a weekday lunch visit, every table was taken within twenty minutes of opening, mostly by people who already knew what they wanted. A woman at the counter ordered without looking at the menu. The man behind her did the same. That tends to be a reliable signal.

The menu is Lebanese, straightforward and not particularly long. Hummus arrives thick and slightly warm, with a pool of olive oil in the center and a dusting of paprika. The baba ghanoush has actual char to it — you can taste the eggplant, not just the tahini. Both come with fresh-baked pita, which is soft and still has some give to it. Order more of it. You will want more of it.

The falafel plate is the thing to get if you are going that direction: six pieces, crisp outside and green inside the way falafel is supposed to be, served with tahini sauce, a simple salad, and rice. It runs around fourteen dollars. The shawarma — chicken or beef — is carved off a vertical spit and served either on a plate or wrapped, and the wraps are generous without being sloppy. The kibbeh, a ground lamb and pine nut mixture formed into oval croquettes, shows up only as a special on certain days; ask when you arrive.

For something cold, the lemon mint juice is worth the two dollars extra. It is made with fresh mint and is genuinely refreshing in a way that earns the description.

Service is efficient and not particularly conversational, which fits the pace of the room. Tables turn. People eat. The food comes out quickly. There is no ceremony around any of it, and that feels right for this kind of place.

Prices are what you would have expected from a place like this before everything got expensive: most plates fall between twelve and seventeen dollars. A full lunch for two with drinks stays under forty dollars without any effort. Dinner pushes a little higher but not dramatically so.

Parking on King Street itself is the usual Old Town challenge, but there is a garage one block south on Prince, and the walk is short. The restaurant does not take reservations for small parties, so if you arrive at 12:15 on a weekday, be prepared to wait a few minutes by the door. It moves fast.

What Pita House actually offers — beyond the food, which is consistent and honest — is the particular satisfaction of a place that has not tried to become something else. No craft cocktail list, no weekend brunch, no seasonal rebranding. Just Lebanese food, made the same way it has been made here for more than forty years, by a family that apparently decided early on that was enough. They were right.
