Central Park pedestrian killed in early‑morning bike collision prompts safety call

Central Park, Manhattan – Richard O’Brien, a 41‑year‑old steamfitter from Port Jefferson Station, was killed early Wednesday morning after a cyclist hit him on East Drive near East 84th Street. Police say the 32‑year‑old rider was riding a pedal bike when the collision occurred shortly after 6:30 a.m.

O’Brien fell to the ground and suffered severe head trauma. He succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, leaving behind his wife, Ronnie, a stay‑at‑home mother, and their two daughters, ages 8 and 12.

Family and community response

Michelle Klch, a longtime friend of the O’Brien family, described the loss as “a hole in our hearts.” She said the family is “heartbroken” and is seeking support through a GoFundMe campaign to help cover living expenses now that O’Brien’s income is gone.

“I want to wake up and pinch myself that this is a bad dream,” Klch said, reflecting the shock felt by many who knew the couple since their teenage years.

Safety concerns and calls for action

The cyclist was also thrown to the ground but remained at the scene and is not being charged at this time. The incident has reignited discussion about pedestrian safety in one of New York City’s most visited public spaces.

The Central Park Conservancy, which manages the park’s grounds, is urging city officials to adopt a 15 mph speed limit on park roads, increase enforcement of traffic rules, and improve bicycle infrastructure. “Our goal is to ensure that families can enjoy the park without fear of accidents,” a Conservancy spokesperson said.

Broader context

While New York City has seen a rise in bike usage over the past decade, safety advocates argue that more robust measures are needed to protect pedestrians, especially early‑morning commuters like O’Brien who walk to work. The Conservancy’s recommendations align with recent city‑government efforts to balance active transportation with public safety.

Mayor Eric Adams’ office has previously highlighted the importance of safe streets, and the Department of Transportation is reviewing speed‑limit proposals for park roadways. Community members hope that O’Brien’s tragic death will accelerate these efforts.

How to help

Friends and neighbors are encouraged to contribute to the GoFundMe page set up for the O’Brien family. Contributions will assist with daily expenses, childcare, and the family’s long‑term financial stability.

In addition, the Central Park Conservancy asks park visitors to remain vigilant, obey posted speed limits, and report unsafe cycling behavior to NYPD’s Central Park precinct.
